Roulette glossary

Action – the money a player wages over time, the criteria for competition judges

American Wheel – the roulette wheel numbered 0 to 36, with the addition of the double zero (38 slots in total) which has lower odds of winning

Ball track – the outer rim where the ball is spun on the roulette wheel

Bankroll – the money used for wagers

Black bet – a bet on the black coloured numbers

Carre – French term for corner bet

Cheval – French word for split bet

Colonne – French for column bet

Column Bet – a bet on any number in a column which comprises of 12 numbers in total

Combination bet – a bet on more than one possible outcome, several chips are placed

Comps – bonuses given by the casino for regular play

Corner Bet – a bet on four numbers, the chip is placed in the centre of the square of four numbers wanted, with an 8-1 payout

Croupier – the roulette operator

Derniere – the French term used to name the third 12 numbers on the dozen bet

Double Zero – coloured green but on American roulette wheels only; this gives the casino better odds of winning

Dozen Bet – a bet on the first 12, second 12 or third 12 sets of numbers, with the chip placed on the indicated area of the board

En Plein – French for the straight bet

European Wheel – a roulette wheel numbered 0 to 36 (37 slots in total) which has better odds of winning

Even Bet – bet on the even numbers on the board

Five Number Bet – possible in American roulette only; a bet which covers the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3

Flat bettor – a player who always bets the same amount

French wheel – same as European wheel

High bet – a bet on the top numbers on the table, from to 19 to 36

House Edge – the ratio or odds of the casino winning

Inside bet – a bet anywhere on the numbers section of the table

Layout Strategies – strategies that consider the positioning of bets only

Low bet – a bet on the low numbers on the table, from 1 to18

Noir – French for black bet

Odd bet – bet on the odd numbers

Outside bet – any general bet outside of the numbers on the table which pay out evens or 2-1 odds

Parlay – double the bet after a win

Passé – French word for the high bet

Payout – the money awarded to the winning bettor

Random Number Generator – the software used by online casinos which generates the numbers on the roulette wheel randomly to ensure fair gaming

Red Bet – a bet on the red coloured numbers

Sixain – French term for the six number or line bet

Six Line Bet – a bet on six numbers

Spin – a single game

Split bet – a bet on two numbers, with the chip placed on the line between the chosen numbers

Straight up Bet – a bet on a single number

Street bet – a bet on a line of three numbers, placed at the edge of the board on the line

Transversale – French term for street or trio bet

Trio bet – another name for the street bet

Vigorish – the commission taken by the casino on any wagers

Zero – coloured green and at the end of the table; if the zero is hit all number bets lose
